AM - Holy crap... what a neat experience. This run was one of the reasons I love running. Up very early to hit the bus up to Central. We were told the rains had made the trail section a bit wet (but it turned out to not be bad at all). Also, the overcast skies made for some pretty dark running. The race organizers tried there best, however, by having a 4-wheeler right behind us, so we could see a little. A little chilly at the start, but not really too bad - low 40's. Race started off with a guy who I later learn is Shawn Martin (brother of Theo and Tim Martin, All-Americans from NAU and Page, AZ) and he is a pretty good runner in his own right, some other guy, and myself. My plan coming into the race, and throughout, was too make sure I DIDN'T race; instead make it a good long run, so I can run well throughout the next couple weeks of training and don't have to recover. So that thought dictated how I ran. About 4 miles into the race, we hit a series of masterful hills along the powerline trail going out of Central. The other guy had nothing on the hills and I just sat right behind Shawn. My mind, however, kept going back to racing since I was right with him, so I stopped at the aide station around 7 and took a gel and let Shawn pull away. As I got going again, I kind of closed the gap. I was having a lot of fun running on this trail/dirt road and subsequently closed the gap and found myself only 30 meters back. So at around 9 I stopped at the aide station and shot the breeze for a couple minutes with an old elementary teacher Mr. Empey. So now Shawn is way up and I can just relax. The views were amazing and the fog was just rolling off the hills. Coming off 12 and onto the paved section of the course, I once again caught Shawn who was going the shoe exchange (I didn't change shoes). So I pulled up on him by about maybe 20 seconds. At this point, I was just rolling down through toward Gunlock. I was caught by Shawn and we just settled into an awesome rhythm. We talked for probably 6 miles and the times just kept getting quicker - down to 6:00 (much quicker than planned). So I told Shawn to just keep on rolling and I held up at another aide station. Then I stopped up at the next one. It was kind of funny, the volunteers didn't understand why I was just stopping and talking and the leader was pulling away! Anyway after Shawn was long gone, I just kept it moving. Around 24 my parents were at the junction of the highway to Mesquite and Gunlock. I chatted with them for a minute and notice I was starting to tighten up, so on I went. The last section of the race is essentially the same as the River 1/2 that kind of ate me up last Sept. Although I was starting to tighten and lose it, I felt better about my running this time than then. The course had a little twist at the end with a loop around a few blocks to add the last mile that was kind of a pain. And at that time, I really just wanted to be done. But on a run this long, I think anyone would really just want to be done.

Finished up by meeting all my goals. I ran solidly, had a lot of fun, enjoyed the scenery, and I think I'll be able to bounce back next week (knock on wood). I entertained myself by singing random notes as I went down through the river bottoms around 23 when I was pretty bored, and had a victory cheer for myself w/ help from the volunteers at 27 when I told them I was now running the longest I ever had!

Today was the kind of day that I think could have been a pretty solid sub 2:30 day. I actually went through the marathon at 2:58 (and that included the much tougher/slower trail section). Fun stuff! (Landreth 184.5)

Nice job Dave, that sounded like just a fun relaxing race. Its so hard not to race when you are in a race! Good job on sticking to your plan and thinking ahead to the future instead of getting caught up in the moment. Good luck with all your summer training!

From Ally Holt on Sat, May 24, 2008 at 15:03:31

As always, I am sooo proud of you Dave. You truly are amazing! You always do an extraordinary job. You really do! Way to go!

From Dustin on Sat, May 24, 2008 at 15:04:36

Dave great job on the race and meeting all of your goals.

From Adam RW- on Sat, May 24, 2008 at 15:21:29

That is great to see such enthusiasm in your report. It is also great that you ran such a great pace for a training run with stopping and all. I'm really looking forward to WBR and talking with you again in person.

From Christi on Sat, May 24, 2008 at 16:33:12

GREAT JOB DAVE! I don't know if you realized that was me that drove past you on your last mile. You looked fantastic! What a beautiful course and well organized race. You SMASHED this one!

Nice job coach!

Great run today Dave. I am in town. When do we start running? Let's have a great summer of training.

From Mik'L on Sat, May 24, 2008 at 17:46:18

Good job Dave. Sounds like you had fun, which is the best part of it. You are stronger mentally to stay back than if you had gone for the big win! Hopefully you will have a quick recovery.

From Lybi on Sat, May 24, 2008 at 17:55:56

Look what you can do when you don't have pneumonia! Great job, Dave. That is an exceedingly long race! Most people don't love running longer than they ever have in their life the very first time. This is one for the record books.

This sounds like my kind of race, you know the fun training ones. I love them because the pressure is off. Glad you had such a fun time and sound like some good conversations.

From dave holt on Sat, May 24, 2008 at 21:11:57

Thanks guys, it was a lot of fun - and I don't know if I could have won had I gone all out anyway.

Christi, I did notice it was you - but I wouldn't say I look good, as I could barely lift my legs!

From Mike Warren on Sat, May 24, 2008 at 23:53:00

Dave, great job! Glad to see you enjoying running again! The sad thing, my time at last years STGM, was 3:29. Almost the same as your relaxed 50K, (Very, Very Sad) Thats why your the man, Awesome run!!!

Awesome race Holt! You're amazing!

Do you know of any sort of a group getting together to run this week? Amanda mentioned something but didn't know details. Just wondering.

From Superfly on Sun, May 25, 2008 at 22:31:48

Sounds like a lot of fun. Wish I could have been there too. Good job.

From dave holt on Mon, May 26, 2008 at 11:02:06

thanks everyone.

Ruth, the Wasatch Back teams are starting to train - Mon, Weds, Thurs. But I am not sure of when and where.

From Michael on Mon, May 26, 2008 at 18:10:32

Wow 50K @6:40 mile - way to run, fantastic effort

From Jon on Mon, May 26, 2008 at 20:58:03

Awesome run! It's funny how you had to keep slowing down- how much were you behind 1st? Ahead of 3rd?

This gets me real excited for my long trail race in June- Logan Peak run. 28 miles or so, but 7400' up and 7400' down. You should come do it, too!

From dave holt on Mon, May 26, 2008 at 21:57:44

Jon, the leader ended up getting me by 10 minutes. He was able to keep a pretty solid pace the last 10K+ and I was slowing to 6:50's, so...

The 3rd place was nearly 30 minutes behind me (but the paper said he got 2nd). Oh well, I don't run for the glory of the Daily Spectrum!

From Ian on Wed, May 28, 2008 at 04:30:57

I really enjoyed reading this race report. You stuck to your plan and had a enjoyable fun time. Stopping at the refuel points was a great idea to relax and not go into race mode.

All the best for your summer training.

From James on Wed, May 28, 2008 at 23:57:47

Nice job buddy! I was down this last weekend but you were a busy man. Next time we'll have to get together.

From steve ashbaker on Thu, May 29, 2008 at 00:05:50

Good job Dave! Interesting distance I must say.

From amanda on Thu, May 29, 2008 at 21:26:36

I'm running again. Because as my mom says, "If you sign up for a marathon you should run some."
