morning - Got up to Cedar and warmed up with just over two miles and caught the bus up to the start. Goals going into the race - I really thought I had a shot at breaking 30 on this race. I knew it would be very tough, but it just felt like it was there. Lined up with Hayden and kind of told him the plan. We took off and right off the bat, I could just tell it wasn't there. When I finished getting schooled by a high schooler I spent a lot of time trying to figure out what the deal was. I went off pouting and didn't watch my bro and bros finish (sorry guys) then went for a run trying to find the Razorback trail up by the golf course - my favorite run when I was up at SUU, found the bottom part of it, but decided I had better get back to the awards and stuff and showed up just in time (4.05 cooldown). During the run I started to feel a little better about it, but still some frustrations. I would be lying if I said that it didn't bug me that Hayden schooled me, but its not only that. Hayden is a stud and ran awesome today - and really he just stuck to the plan way better than I did; some days other runners are just better than you. What I was having a harder time with is that I just don't have any guts - really it was pathetic. I let the exact same thing happen to me last year; Joe pulled away from me at the exact same spot as Hayden did this year. Of course, I am also bothered about not running anywhere close to my goal. I guess you can say get over it, but I think it will be on my mind for a few days at least. I told Hayden that he should be replacing me on the WBR and I really feel that way. Here's the run down. Last year's split in parenthesis.

1-4:46 (4:43) started pretty solid, wanted 4:40, but I was too chill.

2-4:50 (4:49) wanted another 4:40, but it wasn't there.

3-5:03 (4:56) I didn't want anything over 5:00 especially on only the 3rd. blah. Hayden gapped me a little and I just could work back to where I needed to be. Why didn't I just close the gap back up?

4-5:06 (5:07) Wanted 4:50, I new sub 30 was long gone by now, but trying to be positive and thinking I was still near last year's time if I ran a better final two.

5-5:15 (5:30) A glimmer of hope, I new I had gone 5:30 last year. This is where I was supposed to gain huge time, gained a little.

6-5:19 (5:25) Again I was supposed to chunk off 20+ seconds here and only got a couple. I really didn't even go after Hayden like I should have. I was content in 2nd. I used to never be this way.

.2-:59, 5:08 pace (:28, 4:10 pace(?)/ but last year the race was just .13 instead of the full .2; start was moved a little this year) Last year I dug like a mad man to get 31:00, this year I just repeatedly swore under my breathe and cruised in.

It is funny how the two races produced such similar results with such different reactions. Last year I was flying SO high after the race; I couldn't contain how excited I was. This year I was completely negative. It is going away some though - the run after, thinking, and writing about it is helping me feel a little better. Congrats to everyone on great races: Hayden especially, PV runners good job, Bull you are really flying right now. Good job James, Dustin, and Ryan and everyone else. (Cumulus silver 526.25) (Ohana 55.9)

afternoon - 8.35 Sand Hill Trail.  Took it real easy and just enjoyed being out in the desert.  Stopped and enjoyed the views multiple times.  An enjoyable and relaxing run.  (Stratus 478.25)

Well, it happens to the best of us! I would say not to get over it quite yet and use it to fire you up for next week against BYU.

You are still a stud and ran great! Hayden has had a little more motivation this week too.

From Predog on Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 13:41:07

hey don't feel too bad...I got schooled by 2 high schoolers and a bunch of old men because my stupid feet hurt...haha. You are my hero though...just so you know.

From Sasha Pachev on Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 13:47:15

Dave:

Hayden is potentially at least a 2:18 marathoner in St. George. As slow as he is in 800, and as fast as he is in 1600, that is a tell-tale sign. Those types thrive off mileage. Without mileage they are just mediocre high school runners. You give a guy like this a base, and he becomes OTQ material. It is not a shame to get beat by him in this condition. We have a prejudice against high schoolers thinking they cannot possibly have the endurance to run a long race because they are too young. The truth is that they do not have the endurance because they do not have the training. Sub-30:00 10,000 on the track in high school would be no big deal if our high schoolers ran consistent base mileage.

This was a solid race, do not kid yourself about that. Hayden just was able to show his cards.

From Little Bad Legs on Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 13:53:56

Solid time, no matter the place overall. Nice race!

From Wildbull on Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 14:13:13

Dave, your time is good. I think you did not taper much for this race. I think it is inspiring to always want more. To be better. thats what makes you different then the guy sitting on his couch getting fat.

From MarcieJ on Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 14:15:35

I agree that was a solid race! But totally understand the frustration when you have a plan in your head and expectations and it doesnt turn out the way you wanted. It hurts! Us runners are very hard on ourselves! But honestly that was a great time! Good job Holt!

From Jeff on Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 14:34:38

Good job coach. Sorry it didn't turn out like you wanted. I agree with what Bull said, you always want to be better. You know what you did and what you need to do. It is fun to watch you.

From jtshad on Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 15:10:54

A solid race and a solid time. You have been through a lot this year as well. I agree with Marcie that we are our own worst critics and can be hard on ourselves. Just use this as a way to keep you competitive edge razor sharp for the next race...WBR!

From dave holt on Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 17:47:27

thanks guys - it was nice to just go for a chill run this afternoon as well, even though it is going to put me well over my planned mileage for the week. I didn't even think about the race once, until I came back and entered this afternoon's run. I am no longer mad... just want to get better.

From Ally Holt on Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 22:13:23

Dave, you are too hard on yourself. I am very proud of you and I think you did great! Sorry I wasn't there. This just means that the great races are just around the corner. They can't all be great.

From Brent on Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 22:31:14

Coach Holt, normally, you would get 300 commando points for the second place, lets see how you rebound, sometimes, days and lessons pay off. I'll bet you did not pout, you were giving your self a chewing out, thats different than pouting. I am betting on a big rebound.

From James Holt on Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 22:54:43

Good race even though you didnt get quite what you were after. You shouldnt feel to bad. I got schooled by several high schoolers and even a few old men( sorry Bull, you know you rock!!).

From josse on Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 23:00:26

It is so funny how we can get such highs and lows form the thing we just strap on our shoes and do everyday. Great job and the cursing under the breath. That takes talent to be able to run that fast and curse at the same time.

From Dustin on Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 12:03:35

Good job yesterday Dave. I know how it feels to not be that pleased. I wasn't close to any of my goals yesterday, but I guess I just need to train a little harder and try to learn from each race.

Sorry I missed you guys this morning. I did the scout campout thing last night and got back late this morning. I'm just getting ready for my morning run now and it is already hot out.

From Superfly on Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 12:42:11

Good race. I'm glad I missed it though...

From Adam RW- on Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 14:20:47

Solid race and it will work in your favor for motivation. If Hayden is going to replace you having run a 31 and change I should stay in the locker room with my 34 10K... You ran strong with a good time and will be fired up for Fri!

From wheakory on Mon, Jun 16, 2008 at 12:25:16

Nice race James way to put on the jets and start your season with a win. Your definitely ready for the relay more than I am.
