AM - 5 Washington Loop and extension. Fought getting up this morning, but I ended up doing it. Glad I did. Wasn't sore or anything, but a little fatigued in the legs. Feel like I am getting more-and-more ready to roll. I made my final decision on Tucson - All they would give me was 1/2 price entry (not like I am some superhero, yet!, but having a very solid chance to win based on recent times, I thought they would do more than that. Whatever...) - so I won't be going. (Cumulus silver 137.05)

afternoon - 8 River Trail Run - felt the soreness, mostly from the weights, I think, but also probably some from the 4's.  Didn't ever really run out of it too much and the pace was nothing spectacular.  Ave was just over 7:00.  Did almost get hit by about 10 cars which was fun.  I felt like Frogger.  Usually this run doesn't have to deal with much traffic, only 2 lights where I have to stop, but today traffic was pulling out of every corner and store.  And none of them looked right when turning right...Ahhhh, my pet peeve.  (Paramount 231.2)

Sorry about Tucson...I contacted the Tri-Cities RD and gave back a flat out no benefit response even after indicating "you could get the course record." Ditto no response at the Zeitgeist HM in Boise and the Missoula Marathon this past summer...message seems clear that smaller marathons more often than not don't like to comp.

From Dave Holt on Tue, Oct 23, 2007 at 12:42:51

I sure that for smaller marathons, it might be an unusual request, and more difficult to come up with something to help comp. But it seems like they would want some quicker runners to help build their race - I mean a free entry is really no money out of their pocket.

From Sasha Pachev on Tue, Oct 23, 2007 at 12:51:15

That would be one reason to skip it. It is also a Sunday race.

I am running St. Jude on Dec 1. They also have a half, and you can get a comp there. The drawback is that you have to find a way to get to Memphis, TN. Or you can just wait until Painters half.

And, one of the most short sighted things a race director can do is turn down a comp request to a decent runner, especially somebody with a blog that gets over 200 unique visitors a month. Not only will the runner himself not come, he will spread the word. There is no forgiveness for this sin in this world, or in the world to come :-) I've had a few races turn me down for a comp in the past, and I've discouraged every runner I know from running that race when the subject came up. On the other hand, when the race director shows that he understands the meaning of the word "race" and the amount of effort it takes to race well, I strongly encourage others to run it.

I think with the help of the blog we can put some heat on the race directors to make a race a race. It is OK to have a race double as a fund raiser or a party, but it very tempting to make it first a fund raiser or a party, and then a race as a side activity. In my opinion, if you want to have a party, call it a party, if you want to have a fund raiser, call it a fund raiser, but if you call it a race, make it a race first.

I've decided that I'll just keep on plugging until Painter's. The positive spin I'm putting on it is that I'll be able to keep building the base throughout the winter, uninterupted. Then in early Feb. I am going to go down and run Sedona Marathon. Not a fast course, Corbin Talley won it 2 years ago with a 2:40 something, but I hear it's beautiful. Also my wife and I can drive there and make it an outing - and the race is on Saturday.

From Dustin on Tue, Oct 23, 2007 at 14:37:27

Hey Dave

That is interesting I was just looking at the Sedona site over the weekend. I'm thinking about a marathon around that time, a lot depends on if I decide to go out to Boston again or not.

I'm probably going to take it easy for a few more days, and see if I can get this hip pain to go away.

I will get my miles up again Dave. Get the base back up to 70. Thanks for the advise.

I thought you'd like this quote. It reminds me of that post you made. And a few certain someones. ;)
