Race: Painter's Half Marathon (13.1 Miles) 01:10:38, Place overall: 4, Place in age division: 2
Total Distance
17.30

Got to the race and did a warmup of just over 2 miles in my Stratus and got ready to run. Wished Ally good luck on her 5K (30:50 5K PR!) and did a few run outs and got ready to go. Cool, but not really too bad. New the race would be tough with 2 Oly Trials Qualifiers (Logan and Nick M.), plus Sasha and a few others. But I planned on going out a solid, but not killer pace and hit a good solid time. Here's the race report:

Mile / Time

Comment

1 – 5:33

5:33

Planned off taking off at a strong but relaxed pace – and this fit the plan perfectly.

2 – 5:35

11:07

Switching quarters with the pack – only because the pace was where I wanted.

3 – 5:19

16:26

We started to pick it up coming down River Road and onto the trail

4 – 5:12

21:47

Nick makes a couple moves and looks strong, but most of the pack is going with him – only Karl Wilcock had dropped.

5 – 5:25

27:12

Carefully crossed bridge, but should have warned Nick and Logan of the next one. Held pace pretty good up and through Bloomington Hills. Glen falls off around here I think.

6 – 5:09

32:21

Again Nick started to bring pace back down. I slipped back about 5 ft. but made sure I closed it back up.

7 – 5:20

37:41

Nick and Logan gap Sasha and I a little after their big falls – kind of scary, but in retrospect a very funny sight to see them both flying through the air parallel with the ground!

8 – 5:32

43:13

Sasha and I worked together to keep going on the miles down to Bloomington; I wanted to close back on Nick and Logan as they were only about 20 feet up on us for a while, but Sasha thought we should stay. Probably better in the long run, but now I’ll never know ‘cause I didn’t go with it. I think I should have, even if it only lasted for another mile or so.

9 – 5:35

48:48

Slowed a little climbing up onto the Bloom. Loop and Sasha pulled away. I told myself to keep him about 5-10 seconds ahead on the loop and then I would close it on the trail back.

10 – 5:27

54:15

I let Sasha get a little too far up, probably about 20 seconds.

11 – 5:36

59:52

The legs are really feeling the burn, and the counter they put on my plan to pull Sasha back was winning.

12 – 5:34

1:05:26

An up an down mile. I would get strong mentally to go get Sasha and then I would only gain a step and so I would back off. Then I would say go for it and try again with about the same result. Distance was running out.

13 – 5:12

1:10:38

Actually 12.95 on my Garmin and most everybody hit a pretty similar distance. I decided to do one final push to Sasha around the hill and was really burning it up. Best pace for the mile shows 4:30 (although I may have only hit it for a little). I was pumping my arms so hard and breathing so heavy to try and dig something out of my legs that I kind of hyperventilated. Crossing the finish I just dropped to my knees. I couldn’t breathe and there was nothing there. I knew I should move, but couldn’t, and that made me more lightheaded and started to drop, but Ally ran over and Logan jumped in to help me.

Was very happy with how it all turned out - with only one regret! - But felt better pretty quickly after as I relaxed and went on a cool down (2 miles) with Logan. It was the first race of the year and I ran strong, kept my head in the race for the most part and ran 4 minutes faster than last year (on the same - short - course). A great way to start the year and it got me pretty pumped up to get going strong for SLC.

Great races everyone!

Dave very inspiring race. It was fun watching you go by. I could tell you were in the mind frame to close in on Sasha. You guys are all just amazing. I'm still very impressed with the amount of miles and quality training you put in, knowing what the schedule of a teacher and father of three is like.

From George on Sat, Jan 19, 2008 at 20:45:31

Solid stuff. Not familar with that course but it sounds like there must be a good deal of up and down for the diffs in the splits.

Nice work - 70 in January - wow! Good things to come!

From MichelleL on Sun, Jan 20, 2008 at 12:07:31

Great job! I really enjoyed reading your race report. Way to race it and lay it all down. It is so hard to surge in those last miles when you are already wasted. And congrats on doing significantly better this year than last year, that has got to feel good. Way to start out the new year!

From ryan on Sun, Jan 20, 2008 at 13:29:59

It is always good to see you. You are in great shape. It has to give you a lot of confidence running 4 minutes faster than last year, and we all know how good last year turned out!

Great race, Dave! Way to push yourself to the limit at the finish! You are running strong.

Are you running the SLC marathon?

From Dave Holt on Wed, Jan 23, 2008 at 09:37:31

Yes Jeff I am. What about you?

From jtshad on Wed, Jan 23, 2008 at 09:43:31

It is one that I am considering...or Race to Robie Creek in Boise which I think is the same weekend. I need to make up my mind soon as the registration for Robie Creek is a one day event on President's day.

What time are you thinking for SLC?

From Sasha Pachev on Wed, Jan 23, 2008 at 16:16:48

Dave:

Going with Nick and Logan would have been a definite mistake, it would have cost you 15 seconds. In a half any move above your threshold is bad until you have only a couple of miles left. If there is anything you could have done to run the race faster, it would be to ease off a bit on your quarters right after Nick and Logan pulled away, this would have delayed the struggle by about a mile, then once the struggle came, just have me take 2 quarters for every one of yours, and try to make it to 11 like that. Then race and see what happens. I would actually have been fine with that arrangement because I would get a break for at least a quarter versus running alone the entire time, and if I was really stronger, I would have been able to pull away with a mile to go.

In my opinion, when two runners of almost equal fitness are racing, the best thing to do is to work together until one cannot keep the pace, or until the kick. The more fit runner will still win, but both will get a faster time.

The other thing that could have given both of us another 15 seconds would have been to let Logan and Nick go around 4.5. But I did not have the hind-sight of knowing Logan's fitness level. I figured at some point Nick would drop all of us, and as soon as that happens, we want as many non-Nick runners in the pack as possible. So I was going along with his pace until it started to feel unsustainable.

From Dave Holt on Wed, Jan 23, 2008 at 16:53:18

You're right on all points Sasha, but I find it hard to convince myself that I need to keep conserving for later. Although it is something I have really improved on, I still need more experience with it for sure.

Also, even though I thought Logan would win going in (with no Hobie), the strength Nick had and his strong surges really had me thinking otherwise clear until I talked to Logan at the end and heard that he won. Both were very impressive!

From Dave Holt on Wed, Jan 23, 2008 at 16:54:19

Jeff, in my mind I want something similar to SGM - with the slower course, but elevated fitness. But I haven't really plotted it all out yet.
