warmup of probably about .6 miles. Met up with Sasha and Ted at the start of the race and Sasha talked about sharing the lead for 1/4's. I agreed with a little bit of hesitation. (Although I feel good about running fast, it is still a bit intimidating.) 1-5:02 start off strong and feel good about it all. 2-5:14 sharing the lead is working out well. 3-5:03 I think it was around here or so that we were joined by Mike Dudley and he joins the rotation. 4-5:36 still doing well. 5-5:19 the pace seems very manageable and I am feeling positive. 6-5:07 Take a Gu around here sometime and hit a little drink of water. 7-5:52 The uphill and wind on this mile is pretty tough, but I see why Sasha said he didn't want to be alone here. The group is really helping. 8-5:11 Get back into the groove as we make the turn back down the canyon. 9-5:19 I am feeling a bit tired, but am thinking of how well it is all going and thinking if I can just keep up to take my turn, I won't have a lot left. 10-5:55 I am not really sure why this mile dropped so much, but right at the end of it came my turn and I surged up but couldn't hold anything and Mike and Sasha pull away. Keep positive and stick with it, is all I am thinking. 11-5:21 I recover pretty quick and stick right at the same distance from Sasha. 12-5:24 Try a few little surges to work back to Sasha, but everytime I do, it seems like he just keeps the same distance. It's okay though, because I am not settling in. 13- My watch ended it at 12.98 and the pace here was 5:42. Didn't dare look at my overall on the watch because I didn't want to be disappointed with the time. I just thought keep pushing with all you have and it is what it is. Now as I think about it, if I would have looked, I might have been able to dig out that little bit to go under 1:10.

Finished with a 4.3 cooldown.

Overall, I am very happy. This might be my best run ever. I held it together good throughout. Recovered quickly when I started to lose it. And finished strong. I am really please with what happened today and where it is going to take me. Thanks Sasha and Mike for pulling me along. (Ohana 105.4))

Great race Dave! I knew you were going to run strong. That is an amazing time for that course. Your right on track for October 6. Have a good weekend.

From Ruthie on Sat, Aug 11, 2007 at 12:35:07

Awesome job! Did you win any money!?!? :)

From Maria on Sat, Aug 11, 2007 at 12:44:53

Congratulations, Dave! Looks like you ran really strong and had a great race! I don't know specifics of this course, but if it's more or less flat, you might be able to go under 2:30 at St. George, if you keep up the training.

From Mike K on Sat, Aug 11, 2007 at 13:10:26

Nice race! Those first few miles are a bit scary fast downhill. It sounds like you had a good working group. I'm sure they are thanking you for helping with the pacing. Sasha's predictor has you running a 2:25:47 for St. George.

Dave - way to go! It looks like everything in on track - keep it up.

Yea Holt! Great race report and superb running.

From Brent on Sat, Aug 11, 2007 at 15:41:56

Holt, great job, I seen you in the trio with Sasha coming down the big hill as I was going up. Great race.

Mike - I need to fix my predictor. It is tuned for the shorter version of this course. Curt has now fixed the shortness and it has become probably about a minute slower. Dave's performance predicts closer to 2:23 with 70 miles a week training, but he is doing around 100, so the Trials Qualifier is now a very good possibility for him.

Dave the 5:55 mile from 9 to 10 was just plain off. I've been timing our quarters on Hawkes marks. We were at first around 5:25 pace the first 0.5 mile after Nunn's, after that we were slightly under 5:20 pace, then when Mike turned up the heat he was going 5:10. One thing I keep telling everybody - never let unverified mile marks or the GPS control your emotions!

As I told you after the race, this is a major breakthrough. In fact, had I not known the course and seen every turn on it myself, timing the splits on the verified sections, and without James, Chad's, Adam's, Bill's, and Carol's times to establish a baseline, I would be very tempted to call this course short just looking at our times alone.

Ruth - this race has no money. I hope Curt will fix it some day. But Dave's time today definitely deserved it.

Great race Dave. Keep everything going until St. George. Nice work today.

Davetastic! you rock. Great race. you would of broke 1:10 if you would of shaved your face! :)

From ArmyRunner on Sat, Aug 11, 2007 at 18:01:32

Great race Dave. It was nice to meet you today and see you run so well. My Garmin 305 measured 13.15 today and all my splits were pretty accurate with no lost coverage at all so I think the course is accurate. You are well on your way to a possible trials qualifier if you can keep up the high mileage for another 6 weeks!

Thanks everyone! Bill the Fly'n Finn Tribute Beard is what is actually doing the magic! No way it's going anywhere now!

From James on Sat, Aug 11, 2007 at 19:18:41

Dave tahnks for hanging around and running with me after the race. Oh wait, I never even saw you after the race!

I was very impressed with your race today! Sasha was saying that it was a breakthrough race for you, and I agree. If you would have ran like that at Bryce, wow! Sorry you didn't break 1:10 today, but you keep running like that, get on a faster course, and you will destroy 1:10.

From Chad on Sat, Aug 11, 2007 at 20:47:36

Great job, Dave. You were so strong when I saw you on the turnaround. Wish I could have seen you at the start.

From Chris Rogers on Sat, Aug 11, 2007 at 23:13:26

Dave,

Unbelievable race! Your hard work is paying off, and should continue to do so.

From Cody on Sat, Aug 11, 2007 at 23:17:11

Wow Dave, what can I say more?

From Ruthie on Sun, Aug 12, 2007 at 22:45:25

Yes way we are going to Vegas! But we are leaving after practice Monday and most likely will be back for afternoon practice on Tuesday. And what do you mean, IF I run? More like WHEN!!

From jtshad on Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 12:11:07

Great race, you are looking to be in top shape for STGM.
