morning - 7 ND. Nice run with Twix up into the desert. Could feel the sickness and lack of running, but it was nice to be out running. Abs. (Peg green 236.25)

noon - 12 Highland. Twix and I went up to the Highland Trail. On the way out, we came across a dog off leash. I though it was with someone one, but it was lost and kept running from us. Almost home, Py was headed out, so I joined her. We first checked out the dead horse someone dumped at the Dirt Mile - it is gross and starting to stink; why would anyone dump a dead horse there?  I told her about the lost dog, and she wanted to go look for it. We found it and tried to catch it to help it get home. But it ran away, under the tunnels and into the North Desert. We hunted for it for a long time, but no luck. Hopefully it finds some help and doesn’t die out there. Multiple ab sessions today. (Peg oly 452.5)

AM - 4 Twix.  Back to the grind.  Waking up to an alarm today was not pleasant.  I am thankful, however, that today is a teacher work day.  Run was a little better than the last two.  Abs after.  (Boston 270.25)

AM - abs and a 20 min walk with the dogs. It was tough to wake up this morning, and I opted to sleep a little longer and walk. 

afternoon - 9.5 Track/mall. Back to school today and then practice. Did our inaugural Death Run. It was fun, but tough. Being sick again made me a bit more tired than usual, and we went out harder than I thought we would. All part of the experience. I went from almost being out on the first lap to taking 4th 25 mins of pretty solid tempo effort later. Then we finished our time running out by the mall. The Essence was there and it was great running and talking with him. (Peg blue 577.75)

afternoon - Went on a hike with my girls (minus Pyper who was at honor band) and dogs.  We went up in the desert to Elephant Arch.  I have never been there before (at least all the way up to the arch).  It was very pretty and we had a lot of fun.  The girls loved playing in the sand dunes of the wash; it reminded me of doing the same thing as a kid.  Hammy isn't feeling any better which is why I decided against running today.

AM - 3.25 Twix.  Abs and back to the running with Twix.  Hammy felt pretty decent - no pain, no twinge; but we kept it pretty short.  Long run this afternoon.  Hopefully it will hold up well.  Mornings are so warm, really is not a good thing.  But we did get a little bit of rain Saturday and a dusting of snow on the mountain.  (Peg blue 581)

afternoon - 12.25 Turkey Farm.  Good long run.  First half we really worked on keeping guys together with the group.  They did a solid job until their turn.  Then a few of us finished up higher (basically right at the Turkey Farm road).  We had some pickups along the way.  Pace was good, but nothing crazy.  Temps were nice with a bit of a drizzle throughout.  Hammy held up well.  (Peg green 248.5)

afternoon - 14.25 Pioneer Parkway.  Long run with many of the boys.  Group dispersed as time went on, but many did well.  Many girls did well, too.  But got back to find out that many on the team are struggling with their committment as well, and that is very disappointing.  Our run: solid pace throughout especially on the way back.  Decent pick-ups.  Made it nearly to the baseball fields out in Snow Canyon area.  Good discussions about racism as well as suicide.  (Peg black33 503.75)

Sorry about the issues with commitment, tough culture with kids today. That is what affected Rob M. and his decision. I have seen it a lot with the kids here in IF too (though much of that is due to poor coaching atmosphere as well). Way to be a mentor to your team and discuss hard topic and build up those young men and women!

afternoon - 6.5 PV. Warmed up with the boys. Then the team did a 6 min Test. They did very well. Good growth in a month. Then did 3xHill Circuits. Finished with the girls and did a good game of quiz show. Got back to school with the very sad that my dog Molly died. She was an amazing part of our family for the past ten years. I took her out to the desert near Little Black Mountain and found a nice spot for her. In her younger years, she loved to run with me. And she always loved to go to the desert. Although she was old, it was very unexpected. Up until she died, she would get so excited when we would go for walks and jump around like a puppy. What a good dog.

Wasn’t planning on running this morning, but our cute Molly died last night and originally I was going to walk the dogs I his morning because my achilles has been hurting and I thought a walk would do it good. But with the circumstances, I thought it might be good for Twix to get out and run so she wouldn’t be as antsy without her buddy. And it would be good for me, too, to just go for a few. So we did. morning - 20 Santa Clara River Reserve Trails. Big day for me. Old school’ers on here probably won’t believe this (and I couldn’t either). This is my first 20 miler since my final marathon 2 years and 4 months ago!  Back in the day, I remember a discussion with The Circle of Trust where we were saying how it was pretty cool that any day, any time we could go out and get 20 in, and that not many people could do that. So didn’t plan on 20, but I was enjoying the trails and the beautiful morning so much that I just kept going. Got tired toward the end and came home and took a nap, but still ave. 7:30 on the trails; so it wasn’t too sloggy either. Did most of it alone, but started for a mile with Steve and a little with Levi Hawks as well. Did the Rim Trails, then Black Brush, and finished with Barrel Roll; then down the single track to the bridge. Didn’t have any water - on the run or after the run (it spilled in the car in the way over and all over my socks).  Anyway, happy I was able to do it. Runs like this (even if it had been shorter) bring me great joy. And it was a bit cathartic after loosing Molly the other day. (Speedgoat 75.5)

morning - 22.25 ND Trails. Was all over the place this morning. Started off with a few laps of the Dirt Mile with Twix. Dropped her off and grabbed a handheld and gu and went back out. Went up Millcreek and hit Ice House. Decided to time it up and down (used to do some reps on it; would have to hunt down how quick those were, but today was 6:53 up/4:48 down). Such a burner. Then connected that to Mustang. Took my gu after hitting the pump house. Then went up Sand Hill. Hoped it would be in awesome condition after the rain, but the horses had torn it to pieces (I can’t totally remember, but I think 12:10 up/19:10 total). Thought about coming home down Grapevine here; I was really tired and hadn’t ever felt good the whole run. But decided to go up to Bracken’s and hit that loop. As always, it was breathtaking, but I was following the horses here, too. Dropped down to the gully to go through the tunnel then home. Got me excited to make a full Red Cliffs Desert Reserve Traverse FKT attempt. I think I’ll try it over spring break. (Speedgoat 114)

This run made me both feel better for the 55K in a couple weeks, and more worried. I was pretty wiped out and still need to add 10+ miles.

morning - 14.75 DM/Rim Trail. Went and did a couple laps with Twix up at the Dirt Mile. It started snowing and the wind was very cold. Then headed out to Hurricane and ran the Rim Trail with some of the team. It was super awesome. Very cold and windy in the way back, but the snow and trail was definitely worth it. A bit tired on the way back, but still hit a little negative split which is tough on this run with the big climb out of Sink Hole Wash toward the end. I am a bit concerned about our team a bit (I know some of you read this...). I just don’t feel the same vibe as the last few years right now; don’t know how to direct them down the proper path. (Speedgoat 128.75)

morning - 6 Parkway.  Well Twix survived.  She was very antsy this morning; expectedly.  The first part of the run was a bit of a blah while getting the trip out of the legs.  Then the second half was much better.  (Peg Purple 39.5)

morning - 36.5 Trans Red Cliffs Desert Reserve. This is something I have wanted to do for a very long time. I’m not in shape to do it, but I did it anyway. So the idea is to basically link a bunch of the trails in the Reserve and run across the whole thing from Silver Reef to Ivins. Excluding the first section in Silver Reef, I’ve ran every step of this run, but never linked together. Ally dropped me off at the dirt road for the Pioneer cemeteries in Silver Reef and I got started just before dawn. Not surprisingly, I took a wrong trail here and probably added an extra mile or more. Super pretty up there, though, so no stress (Supposed to be on White Reef, but was in Red Cliffs East (?), then connected to where I was supposed to via somehing like Tippets (?). That brought me to Red Cliffs, where I connected to Prospector via Adams. Took Prospector until Spanish Wash. From here connect to the upper section of Beacken’s via Coachwhip. Then down Grapevine to Sand Hill. These sections were the slowest and, obviously, the toughest. The sand was nice from the rain, but was very deep and destroyed by horses making it impossible to get a decent run in. Add in the break to dump sand out of the shoes and enjoy my favorite lookout in the whole Reserve, and I was well behind my goal pace. Did well up Millcreek and Mustang.  Started to get a bit tired along the Powerline, but that faded and I had a good section on the short paved section to connect to T-Bone. From there went across to City Wells (which is always awesome). After another short paved stint, got up to Chuckwalla and took it across to Scout Cave. In here I was around 30 miles and getting very tired. The drop of the point to Scout Cave was brutal on my legs. Every step was slow and deliberate - very slow here. Once in the wash, I somehow missed my trail turnoff and got put on the road past Entrada. There was no way I was back tracking - every step was a challenge and I knew where I could connect back with the correct trail. So I worked my way back to the final section - Toe Trail. Normally this would be a very easy and good ending section, but I was spent. I walked too much here, but forced myself to get back to a jog and finally brought the journey to an end at the 200 E Trailhead in Ivins. 6:02 and 36.60 miles.  (Speedgoat 219.5)

Glad I finally did this. As far as I know, no one has ever run this whole thing. So many pretty places and cool trails. And a major accomplishment for someone that has only run 20 miles twice in the past 2 1/2 years. I will definitely do this again sometime. Hydrated and fueled very well. The temps were nice.  And even though the wind was blowing against me most of the run, it helped keep thing a little cooler.  A good end to a very enjoyable Spring Break.

morning - 10.5 Sand Hill. Took Twix out for just a little. Then ran Sand Hill and marked the top for our run on Monday. I stopped at the top and just enjoyed the view - it is without a doubt the best view of everything around. Push up was okay (12:50) and down seemed  good (6:50)(19:40 total). AM - 13.25 Parkway/DM.  Parkway with Twix.  It was a pretty slow pace.  A lot of physical fatigue this morning.  Felt way hard running with the boys as we warmed up for the tempo.  Had originally planned on running with the girls, but like none of them were there, so I figured Robs would have it all under control! Got the tempo going and I just stayed off the back and tried to let the team learn and grow, ocassionally I would give some advice (sometimes a little more pursuasively than others).  They did a good job and rolled with it pretty well for the requisite 17 mins.  Then cooled.  (Boston 429.25)

morning - 12.5 Baldy. And insane adventure with the PVXC boys for Renegade camp. Last year we couldn’t do this because of the rain and some who wouldn’t have been able to complete it. I had an idea what we were getting into, but I really had no idea! We parked at Mud Lake and ran/hiked Mt. Shelby. It was beautiful. The view to Baldy we’re just off the charts, but this one was tough and it made me realize Baldy was going to be over the top. So we dropped off the mountain sometimes bushwhacking, sometimes on a trail. The best (and very cool) runnable section was from here down to Blue Lake. The blueness of the lake was jaw dropping. We finally hit the lake and started the climb to Baldy. Once we got above the tree line things got crazy. It was so hard. I was worried about the boys and I was worried about myself. It was a thousand vertical feet of scree climbing. You just had to keep moving because you would lose half your progress sliding back down. There were the cool fossils for the whole climb. When we finally made it to the top, we weren’t sure how to get down. The way we wanted to go just had more climbing up another hill, but felt less safe. So we decided to ski the scree down the whole peak back to the lake. It took forever even though the time we were just sliding - 45 mins down and tons of ankle destroying rocks. The big prob with this was now we’re back at the lake and had to climb all the way back to the road and everyone was spent. Basically we hiked the rest of the way out. This was super challenging and very soul-finding. Everyone one of us found ourselves just trusting the others to keep us going and safe. morning - 13.75 Sand Hill/Bracken’s Loop. Good morning in the desert. The last two evenings we have had significant rainfall right in top of us in Washington. And last night was one of the biggest storms I ever remember - not even speaking in hyperbole, I would guess we’ll over an inch in half an hour and then continued rain for another hour or more. In the desert, that is a lot of rain. So I went down to Main Street to see the destruction. It was like what you see on tv - red mud everywhere, chunks of cement from sidewalks in the middle of the road, roads undercut and washed out, mud up into people’s houses; bumma. Into the desert you could see where all the mud came from - all the day washes were washed out, trails had been turned into flash flood washes, all loose sand was gone and rocks were everywhere. The power of the water must have been amazing. Sand Hill was in the best shape I’ve ever run in it. The only other tracks were a set of small coyote or large fox tracks that went all the way up and down the backside. And I crushed it. 9:39 up and 5:22 down. Both records. But when I added them for the total I was slightly bummed to see that I was at 15:01... ahhh! Way good though, especially after feeling so heinous on Monday. This coming Monday, I plan not to pushed hard up, rather station myself part way to help encourage the team, so I won’t get a time in it then. Decided to continue around Bracken’s Loop. Hiked up one of the big sandstone outlooks and just chilled for awhile. There is nothing in the world like the morning after a rainstorm in the desert - so peaceful, clean and fresh. I just meditated up there for a good half hour. After hiking down, I continued around the loop. The trials had been pretty washed out, but all things considered were in great condition. afternoon - 8.75 River Trail.  We got supremely pranked today by Christian Allen of Weber St. He said he was a new kid moving into our school and we were pretty stoked about what that might do for us heading into Nike.  But a little into the run, some of the team (Ry, Jess, Jose) thought he looked exactly like Carson's friend from Weber.  I put those pieces together with the fact that he didn't answer me when I called his name earlier and we decided it was a prank.  But he had the top guys going through the whole run.  It was pretty good stuff.  When we finished and he was telling the guys, I heard him say he went to Copper Hills, his name came right back to me and I totally remembered him.  I'm still laughing about it.  (Peg Purple 290)

afternoon - 10 Black Ridge.  I've always wondered about this trail off the freeway going up the Black Ridge, and last week Decker mentioned it as well.  So, today I went up there and went exploring.  The trail isn't too bad in most places and is very runnable.  A couple places the lava is pretty tough, but very limited areas.  Really enjoyed the run and saw some cool stuff - some pretty blue birds that had a wierd call I'd never heard, a huge trantula as large as my hand, and an enormous gopher snake with beautiful golden color and brown markings (it was over 5 feet long!).  Toward the end of the run I was feeling pretty blah, but I enjoyed the run and the new trail.  (Peg green 416.25)

morning - 13.5 DM/Junction. Short walk with Twix and three laps on the dirt mile (the construction equipment is gone for now, so you can still make the loop). Then dropped off the dog and went out to the junction. Was a bit tight and flat (probably from the workout yesterday - which is what I’m looking for). afternoon - 4 Sandberg’s. Just an nice run with some rain. Got a unbelievable email from a parent calling me all sorts of names for daring to not allow a student to just not come to class and get an A. Craziest thing I’ve ever heard in 20 years of teaching. On another note, today marked the third straight day I could touch my toes!  It takes a lot of work, but I’ve been working on loosening my hammies as I think it may help me be stronger and healthier. Yikes, kids are seriously getting over protected a cautionary tale for what we need to look to avoid. Our kids need challenge to grow, not parents keeping all issues away from them. I know my kids (me as well) have matured through facing tough times and challenges.
